Louisville Youth Group's 21st Anniversary

“When I was 17, the Indiana Youth Group was a huge supporter, and helped us get started over 21 years ago” recalled Natalie Reteneller, the first Director of the Louisville Youth Group (LYG). “At the age of 16, my boyfriend and I both came out - to each other - and it has always been a privilege that my parents were supportive. The support of adults back then, and how much they went out of their way to make us feel accepted was instrumental in my self security, and my giving back for the years to follow.” Reteneller, who now works at the YMCA in Safe Place Services, encouraged young individuals to “rise up and take over,” to continue to help provide a place that provides comfort and saves lives.
“When we started, our group was very diverse, and helped to create a safe space across a broad spectrum, which I am very proud of” shared Reteneller. “I want to give a shout out to the parents that are here, it is extremely important and valuable to our youth to have them involved!”

“We want to challenge the alumni to step-up to the plate” explained Donald Taylor, the second and current Executive Director of LYG. “We are awarding our first inaugural LYG Esteemed Alumni award to Matt Spencer, for following in Natalie’s footsteps- seeing the need, and stepping up to meet it.”

Of the nine present LYG youth participants, Ernesto and Kate, two members of the Youth Council, shared their experience with guests.

“Being here and doing everything I can makes me happy” shared Ernesto, who comes to LYG 1-2 times a week. “We have all become close, and being here brightens my day. I’m happy that I found LYG, and that a place like this exists for us!”

“Its like a home for all of us” added Kate. “Its nice to know that people are thinking about you… I’ve never heard so many kids burst out into Broadway musical songs!”

The Louisville Youth Group works to “boost the self-esteem of GLBT youth by providing a safe space that encourages positive life choices, teaches healthy interactions with peers and adults, and develops activities in which youth are challenged to reach their full potential. We envision a universal community that accepts, affirms and uplifts all young people, no matter what their identity.” To find out more or to get involved with LYG visit louisvilleyouthgroup.com
