The U of L Basketball team made a guest appearance at the Galt House Cochran Ballroom for Family & Children’s Place Caper following their game against DePaul. Guest appearances by U of L players and coaches is a tradition at this annual fundraiser, which offers family-friendly post-game fun. Guests enjoyed tasty treats from Rocky’s, Buckhead’s, Cabot Cheese Company, Chili’s, McAlister’s, Little Caesar’s, Consumers Choice Coffee, McDonalds, and Comfy Cow as they bid on live and silent auctions, packed with sports packages and memorabilia. Funds raised from the Caper help support Family & Children’s Place to build brighter futures by healing the trauma of abuse, violence, and neglect and promoting safe, healthy, and stable families through research- based services.

Family & Children’s Place serves 6,500 children and families each year throughout Kentuckiana and the shocking truth is that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused by the age of 18. While the ultimate vision is a community where children are free from abuse, they are currently the region’s only comprehensive resource for the intervention and treatment of child sexual abuse.

The U of L Athletic Department’s long-standing support of Family & Children’s Place is more significant than ever in the wake of sexual abuse scandals at Penn State and Syracuse. Among media coverage of the scandals, a Louisville voice was heard when ESPN writer Rick Reilly featured the personal story of abuse shared by Imperium Health Management CEO Gary Thompson, whose powerful story had been shared for the first time at the Building Brighter Futures Breakfast for Family & Children’s Place. Now Thompson stands up against abuse as a board member working with other brave individuals to build a state-of-the-art Child Advocacy Center slated to break ground on the corner of 5th and Kentucky in early 2012. President Dan Fox says, “The new facility will co-locate multiple agency partners to greatly reduce fragmentation of services, reducing secondary trauma for child victims who otherwise might have to retell their story and increase successful prosecution of offenders.”

Following their game against DePaul, the U of L Basketball team proved themselves to be good sports in a generous move that’s a win for children and families! LS/TA
