The crowded room was filled with compassionate hearts and wagging tails. There was no barking. The theme of the annual Tuxes and Tails Kentucky Humane Society’s fundraiser was Cowboy Cats and Denim Dogs, held August 7 at the Galt House Hotel.

More than 300 guests participated in a silent and live auction contributing a record donation of $155,000.

The invitation hinted the dress would be casual, but the attire varied from dressy to casual, with visiting pooches sporting “Looking For Love” vests.

Auction items included animal artwork, jewelry, sport related items, wine, weekend get-a-ways, dog services and many other items.

Sandie Melton, a longtime Kentucky Humane Society supporter, recently rescued three dogs who were tied together and wandering in her neighborhood. She found the owner’s daughter and was told they were not wanted. Sandie’s parents gave one a home, and she located someone who was interested in taking the other two. When she returned to pick up the dog, she was told the other two were given away. “It’s hard to understand that,” she said.

Stories like that drive the staff and volunteers. Lori Kane Redmon, president of KHS for six years, thanked all the “countless” volunteers. “One of the rewarding aspects of my job is watching adopted pets leaving for new homes.”

To help facilitate that, KHS opened a spay and neuter (S.N.I.P.) clinic recently. “Our goal is to ultimately put us out of business because there will be no need to shelter pets.”

In 2009, 6,194 pets were adopted, which was more than any other Kentucky agency. Feeder’s Supply, a partner, plays a huge role in making that possible. KHS offers boarding, grooming, training, doggie day care and in- home pet sitting at selected locations. Fetch more information at www.kyhumane.org or call 502-366-3355.
